What Are Boundaries?

Types of Boundaries:

Physical/Sexual – These boundaries protect your body. You decide who can touch you, how they can touch you, and where. These boundaries help you answer questions such as “Do I shake hands or give a hug?" When entering any sort of romantic relationship physical boundaries are particularly important to set early on. If you set physical boundaries in a romantic relationship and they are not respected, that is a red flag.

Emotional – These boundaries protect your private thoughts and emotions. You decide what deep thoughts and feelings you will or will not share with others. Talking about these thoughts and feelings can make you feel vulnerable and should only be shared with people who have earned your trust.

Time – These boundaries protect your schedule. You decide what you spend time on and who you spend time with. Be mindful of the time you have and, what wastes or demands too much of your time. You can take control and allow more time for the things that are most important to you.

It is important to realize that someone else's boundary violations are not your fault. It's okay to say “stop" whenever someone makes you feel uncomfortable or tries to make you do something that is not right for you. Be true to yourself and stay strong!
